Chesters (Roman name Cilurnam) lies just to the north of the river Tyne a little to the west of Chollerford and a short drive from the market town of Hexham. It is one of the best preserved cavalry forts in Britain.

Things to do when you are visiting the area around Chesters.

1. The Military road crosses the River North Tyne at Chollerford.

2. The George hotel is alongside the bridge and offers afternoon tea and scones.

3. Visit Kielder water, cycle the trails and watch the wildlife.

4. Explore the valley of the North Tyne and visit the Black Middens Bastle house at Tarset.

5.The market town of Hexham offers good shopping and plenty of sightseeing.

A little further away and you have the Allendale Valley. This valley which lies in the foothills of the North Pennines has a history of lead mining and there are museums and historical sites to visit.

As you travel towards Alston, the highest town in England, you will enter Upper Weardale. This area was one of the earliest places where Methodism started.

The market town of Hexham can offer good shopping, restaurants as well as history with the old Abbey and one of the oldest Gaols in England.
